Two-year-olds’ acquisition of the possessive morpheme: An acoustic analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous research shows that 2-year-olds’ production of third person singular -s, but not plural -s, is affected by coda complexity, though both are more accurately produced in durationally longer utterance-final compared to utterancemedial position. This study explores these effects with possessive -s. Acoustic analysis of 10 two-years-olds’ elicited imitations examined children’s use of simple versus complex codas (e.g. Sue’s vs. Doug’s) both utterance-medially and utterance-finally. Morpheme production was surprisingly robust across contexts, but coda clusters were often simplified to -s singletons utterance-medially (e.g. Doug’s [d z]). The findings raise many questions about lexical and morphological development in typical and language-impaired populations.

متن کاملAcquisition of English Prenominal and Postnominal Genitives
This study examined the acquisition of prenominal and postnominal genitives by Iranian EFL learners. Two variables were considered: possessive categories and language proficiency. We considered the influence of possessive categories such as lexical modifier, semantic relationship, and weight and syntactic complexity on genitive alternations by Iranian EFL learners. Also, we examined whether the...
متن کاملAccuracy Order of Grammatical Morphemes in Persian EFL Learners: Evidence for and against UG

To this end, the accuracy order of nine morphemes including plural –s, progressive –ing, copula be, auxiliary be, irregular past tense, regular past tense –ed, third person –s, possessive -ʼs and indefinite articles was studied in 6...
متن کاملAcoustic investigations into the later acquisition of syllabic -es plurals.
PURPOSE Children acquire /-z/ syllabic plurals (e.g., bus es) later than /-s, -z/ segmental plurals (e.g., cat s, dog s). In this study, the authors explored whether increased syllable number or segmental factors best explains poorer performance with syllabic plurals. METHOD An elicited imitation experiment was conducted with 14 two-year-olds involving 8 familiar disyllabic target plural noun...
متن کاملPhonological and morphophonological effects on grammatical development in children with specific language impairment.
BACKGROUND Five-year-olds with specific language impairment (SLI) often struggle with mastering grammatical morphemes. It has been proposed that verbal morphology is particularly problematic in this respect. Previous research has also shown that in young typically developing children grammatical markers appear later in more phonologically challenging contexts. AIMS The main aim was to explore...
